This isn’t meant to be a portrait of SZA. It’s what her music feels like to me.
When I paint artists, I’m not necessarily interested in creating a perfect representation of their face. I want to capture something less tangible — the emotion, energy, colors, and feelings that come to me when I listen to their music.
SZA is one of my favorite artists, and this piece is my interpretation of the world her music creates for me. There’s vulnerability and softness, but also confidence, complexity, and a certain rawness that I wanted to translate onto the canvas.
Created using acrylic paint and charcoal, the piece intentionally leans into abstraction. The charcoal brings a rough, imperfect quality against the paint — much like the emotions in music aren’t always clean or easy to define.
It isn’t about painting exactly what I see.
It’s about painting what I hear and how it makes me feel.
