The Mallard started with a friend reaching out and asking me to paint a duck - a little nod to our time together at Marine Science Technician School, where the mallard became something of a mascot for us.
The inspiration came from an image I found of a mallard underwater. I loved the unusual perspective: the duck floating peacefully above the surface while its feet were still visible underneath, surrounded by these incredibly vibrant colors. It immediately felt like something I wanted to paint.
This was only the third large-scale painting I had ever made, and at the time, I was still very much discovering what my own style looked like. Looking back at it now, I can see pieces of what would become part of my work - bold color, movement, and my love for painting animals.
The original is still available. It is a 24 × 30-inch original on canvas, created using a combination of acrylic and spray paint.
